Overview

xS.T.R.E.A.M. Minds Academy (xMA) is a K–8 charter school committed to personalized learning, S.T.R.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education, and Social-Emotional Learning. The Director of Student Supports will serve as a key member of the leadership team, overseeing all programming, compliance, and services related to special education, Section 504, English Language Learners (ELLs), and students receiving Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports. This leader will ensure a strong Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is in place across academics, behavior, and social-emotional development.


Key Responsibilities

Special Populations Leadership

  • Serve as the school’s Special Education Coordinator, 504 Coordinator, and EL Point of Contact, ensuring full compliance with federal and state laws

  • Oversee identification, evaluation, placement, and programming for students with IEPs, 504 Plans, and EL services

  • Lead development, implementation, and monitoring of IEPs and 504 Plans in collaboration with teachers, related service providers, and families

  • Coordinate EL services and ensure appropriate accommodations, progress monitoring, and language development supports

  • Maintain accurate student support data, records, and documentation required by ALSDE, authorizers, and school leadership

Instructional Support & Inclusive Practices

  • Collaborate with the Dean of Instruction and Culture to ensure instruction is differentiated and inclusive of diverse learners

  • Support teachers in implementing accommodations, modifications, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies

  • Lead coaching and professional development on inclusive instruction, IEP implementation, language acquisition, behavior supports, and Tiered interventions

  • Ensure that specialized curriculum and technology tools (e.g., TeachTown, Unique Learning, AAC devices) are effectively implemented

MTSS & Behavior Intervention

  • Support the design and implementation of xMA’s schoolwide MTSS system, including data-based interventions across tiers

  • Collaborate with the Student Culture Manager and Behavior Support Team to monitor behavior intervention plans (BIPs), functional behavior assessments (FBAs), and progress

  • Participate in Student Support Team (SST) meetings, serving as the lead coordinator and ensuring timely referrals and progress monitoring

  • Ensure that all student support interventions are trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and strengths-based

Leadership, Compliance & Family Engagement

  • Lead the coordination of special education eligibility meetings, IEP meetings, 504 meetings, and EL reclassification

  • Partner with families to ensure meaningful participation in planning and support processes

  • Support annual Child Find efforts and collaborate with the Executive Director to ensure compliance with all IDEA, Title III, and Section 504 mandates

  • Manage service provider contracts (e.g., OT, PT, SLP, psychological evaluation services) in coordination with the school operations team

  • Lead professional development sessions related to SPED, 504, ELL, and MTSS throughout the year


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field strongly preferred

  • Valid Alabama Special Education or Instructional Leadership Certification preferred

  • Minimum 3 years of successful teaching or case management experience in Special Education or English Learner services

  • Prior experience managing or coordinating SPED/ELL/504 programs in a school or district setting

  • Deep knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, Title III, and MTSS frameworks

  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity and inclusive practices

  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Belief in xMA’s mission, model, and superhero-themed culture
