Overview

Our superhero-themed model champions every child’s strengths while supporting their emotional and behavioral needs.

We are seeking a compassionate, equity-driven, and proactive School Counselor who will lead the design and delivery of a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate counseling program that supports the academic, emotional, and social growth of all students. The Counselor will also serve as a key member of the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and student wellness team.


Key Responsibilities

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) & Mental Health Support
  • Lead the school-wide implementation of xMA’s SEL programming, aligned with CASEL’s five competencies and the school’s P.O.W.E.R.S. values

  • Deliver direct instruction on SEL skills through classroom push-ins, small groups, and targeted interventions

  • Provide individual and small-group counseling services for students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges

  • Collaborate with the Dean of Instruction and Culture and Student Culture Manager to promote a positive, inclusive, and safe school climate

  • Design and implement Tier 2 and Tier 3 social-emotional interventions and monitor student progress

Student Support & Crisis Management
  • Serve as a key member of the MTSS Team and coordinate behavior and wellness supports for students needing additional interventions

  • Respond to student crises and provide short-term counseling and referrals to community-based mental health services

  • Conduct risk assessments and safety planning in collaboration with the Executive Director and external partners, when necessary

  • Assist in creating and updating Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and supporting implementation with staff

Family & Community Engagement
  • Build trusting relationships with families and provide ongoing communication regarding student supports and SEL resources

  • Collaborate with the BCBA, Student Support Team, and Mental Health Coordinator to lead Parent emPOWERment Workshops, offering strategies and tools for families to support their child’s development at home

  • Refer families to outside counseling, social services, or mental health agencies as needed

Data & Compliance
  • Maintain clear, confidential records of counseling sessions and interventions

  • Track and analyze SEL, behavior, and attendance data to support early intervention and school-wide planning

  • Support compliance with counseling-related policies, ethical standards, and mandated reporting laws

Collaboration & Professional Development
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, special educators, and staff to implement trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices

  • Co-lead staff PD sessions on SEL, behavior de-escalation, and classroom climate strategies

  • Stay up to date on best practices in counseling, child development, restorative practices, and MTSS


Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field

  • Valid Alabama School Counselor Certification (or eligibility to obtain)

  • Minimum of 2–3 years experience in a K–8 school counseling or mental health role preferred

  • Strong knowledge of SEL programs, trauma-informed care, PBIS, MTSS, and restorative practices

  • Experience supporting diverse student populations, including students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and at-risk youth

  • Deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and the social-emotional development of all learners

  • Strong communication, organization, and relational skills
